just-shower-thoughts:

If google was serious about being spooky, instead of playing scary music and flicking lights, saying “Hey Google, let’s get spooky!” would make your google home tell you all the things that google’s algorithm has learned about you based on your data.

Yup. That’d do it, alright.

I had a kid in Grade 3 question Henry the security bear’s choice to dress up for Halloween.

Kid: Why’s he wearing that?

Me: Because he’s excited about Halloween, of course.

Kid: *rolls eyes* He’s not real, he’s just a teddy bear. Teddy bears aren’t alive.

Me: Oh? How do you know?

Kid: Because he doesn’t move.

Me: Are you sure? Maybe he just moves when you’re not looking.

Kid: *pause; wide eyed* …Have you seen him move?

Me: Oh yeah! Loads of times!

Kid: *gapes*

deaflepuff: It is International Week of the Deaf this year it’s...

deaflepuff:

It is International Week of the Deaf this year it’s all about Full Inclusion with Sign Language!

([image text; purple background header, white font INTERNATIONAL WEEK OF THE DEAF 2017, 18 to 24 September. [orange font]
THEME: [purple font] [black font] FULL INCLUSION WITH SIGN LANGUAGE! International Week of The Deaf 2017 takes place under the theme ‘Full Inclusion with Sign Language!!’. It is in tandem with the 3rd International Conference of the World Federation of the Deaf and believes that full social inclusion of deaf people is possible when sign language is recognised and used widely within the society. International Week of the Deaf 2017 stresses the importance of sign language. Without the actual recognition, facilitation and promotion of it, the rights outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the recently adopted 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals cannot be fully achieved.
[orange font] CAMPAIGN
[purple font] KEY MESSAGES [green background box, white font] BIRTH RIGHT - [grey background box, black font] Draws upon the principle of basic human rights in relation to language acquisition at birth. When acquired fast, it enables deaf children to have full communication with people, improving their cognitive and social skills. Deaf children need access to sign language from birth.

[orange background box, white font] DEAF IDENTITY - [grey box, black font] Identifies deaf people as belonging to a cultural and linguistic community, who use sign language as a mother tongue or natural language to communicate.

[yellow background box, white font] ACCESSIBILITY - [grey background box, black font] stresses that deaf people need access to public information and services via sign language interpreting, subtitling and/or close-captioning. A key factor to accessibility for public services such as health care, employment, social activities or any other government services is provision of and access to sign language.

[purple background box, white font] EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES - [grey background box, black font] Sign language competency for communication and provision of interpreters mean that deaf people can do almost any job. It is important for deaf people to equally aspire securing jobs that reflect their interest and competency. The main barriers to employment arise from accessible work environments rather than an inability to hear.

[green background box, white font] LIFELONG LEARNING - [grey background box, black font] Access to education, vocational learning, and ongoing progessional training and development is key to gaining and retaining a job and earning a wage that allows independent living.

[orange background box, white font] EQUAL PARTICIPATION - [grey background box, black font] Deaf people need to have equal access to participation in the personal, public and political area as everybody else. More importantly, it is necessary to ensure that deaf people have the opportunity to take up leadership roles, so that deaf people themselves can appropriately advocate for their rights and be involved in all decision-making processes concerning their lives. This is a reflection of the slogan ‘Nothing About Us without Us’.

[yellow background box, white font] BILINGUAL EDUCATION - [grey background box, black font] Urges stakeholders to accept the need for bilingual education for a deaf child and to understand how quality bilingual education should be provided in a sign language environment. Bilingual education is a social-cultural approach of using sign language of instruction in all subjects with a parallel strong emphasis on teaching, reading and writing of the language used in the country or society.

[purple background box, white font] EQUAL LANGUAGE - [grey background box, black font] Recognises sign language as a valid, linguistic means of conveying thoughts, ideas and emotions. It is a fully operating language with its own syntax, morphology and structure. It fulfils all features serve to define the notion of a language. This has been confirmed in many systematic linguistic research on sign language since the late 1970s.

In the middle of all the text boxes there is a logo of two hands touching with the words ‘FULL INCLUSION WITH SIGN LANGUAGE’ and at the bottom of the page, the logo for World Federation of the Deaf, International Week of the Deaf, and a barcode with the word ‘donate’ underneath.])

New Zealand library cracks case of the missing books

New Zealand library cracks case of the missing books:

Yet another reason why we need to develop some way for homeless people to be able to take out material.

Public libraries are their libraries too, it’s not fair for them to get excluded from patron rights due to not having an address or having to worry about the books getting damaged in the streets. If we can devise systems for getting materials out to housebound people, people in hospitals, inmates, and women’s shelters we can devise one for homeless people.

It’s unfair that the same rules that apply to other patrons so often don’t apply to them. Not only does it create a tier of second-class patrons, but homeless people are probably one of the groups that need free access to information more than anyone.

Literally, where else could they get it?

Perhaps some sort of cubby system, or maybe they could hand their books in for safekeeping during the night and have it put on a shelf similar to how one might have a hold self-pickup area, except that instead of holds it’d be for the books that the homeless had out? (it could even be somewhere in the staff area and the patron could request their book to a staff member so that there would be less danger of someone taking the book another person was reading)

Today this adorable little Grade 3 asked if she could read to the teddy bear that sits on the service desk.

I told her of course, he LOVES hearing stories! Whenever she wants to, she’s more than welcome to read to him, because he’s always up for a good story.

She read him three books, and when it was time for the Grade 3s to go back to class she asked if she could give the bear a hug “because he’s really cute”.

I told her the only thing Henry likes more than stories is hugs – he’s a bear, after all, bears are famous for their hugs!

Today I was at my desk doing something or other on the computer when I heard the telltale pitter-patter of the kindergarteners shuffling from the gym back to their classroom.

I then heard several of them pretending to be puppies, complete with “Woof woof! Groff. Woof!”s answering back to one another.

It was extra cute because they woof-ed in stage whispers so as to not interrupt the other classes. I couldn’t turn around to watch or I’d never be able to keep a straight face.

How to get your child & teen patrons to completely LOSE THEIR MINDS

Get you some flip books.

I put out one for the kids to look at while they waited their turn to check out their book and HOLY COW they like those things. The first time they saw them the kids absolutely LOST IT.

They were utterly mindblown, I kid you not. I don’t think I even have the words to capture how crazy the kids went over the flip book, to be honest. I think I kinda broke their brains. I had kids asking if I had any more and when I said I did one kid replied with “OH MY GOD, BRING THEM ALL!!!!” to the approval of his nodding classmates.

Now that it’s the second week the excitement doesn’t seem to be abating – they all just make a beeline for the flip books and chatter excitedly about them. And this is across the board too – from Grade 1 all the way to Grade 12, the students have all been utterly mesmerized by my flip books.

I’ve had kids ask me if they can buy one from me, ask me where they can get them, ask whether they can take them out as one of their books, and I today had some high schoolers who even had the (quite brilliant) idea of using one of their phones to film the flip book in action to show to their friends and family.

Oh I loved the magic treehouse series

The ColSec Trilogy.

Does The Little Vampire series count? It’s not famous in North America but it is in Europe…

Also the Silverwing trilogy by Kenneth Oppel. It’s about a bat who gets separated from its colony just before they’re due to migrate.

useless-catalanfacts:

Catalan legends and mythology 4/?

Comte Arnau (Count Arnau) was a knight who had sexual relations with an abbess and didn’t pay his farmers what he had promised, and for these sins he was condemned to ride an undead black horse for eternity while his flesh is devoured by flames.

There are many different versions of the legend that explain the cause of his doom, but all of them agree that, even nowadays, he can be seen riding his horse in stormy nights.

the-knights-who-say-book:

do characters in modern fairytale retellings know their life is a retelling? bc they act like they don’t even notice. i’ve never read a retelling where the main character is like “huh… wait a minute… my name is ELLA and i have TWO STEPSISTERS who are SUPER MEAN and i’m about to go to  BALL…. this is ringing a bell”

like, i want a retelling where the mc realizes what’s going on and is like “oh shit i am NOT having this” and then like, uses their knowledge to their advantage? like they realize that if their life is a cinderella retelling then their step siblings are probably going to destroy the beautiful dress they painstakingly sewed, and they should probably make sure the dress is safely protected at a friend’s house

OH. or a retelling where even though they do this, the retelling insists on happening anyway?? they save the dress, but then their step siblings tear up the painting they’ve been working on instead. they wear boots that can’t fall off to the dance, but somehow they lose one big dangle earring as they run away. the Retelling will Not Be Stopped, Ella-who-insists-on-going-by-their-middle-name-but-no-one-listens-to-them, the Retelling Must Have Its Sacrifice

slytherin-bookworm-guy:

I often see posts where people feel like they don’t have a decent book blog because they don’t have a decent camera or a massive book collection.

This is a gentle reminder that you don’t need all that, you just need to love books.

If you have a massive book collection, brilliant :)
If you don’t, that’s cool :)
Use the library, Sweet :)
Don’t have access to a library, it’s okay :)
Don’t own a lot of physic books and you read mainly e-books, great :)
Have a nice camera, cool :)
Just using your phone camera, still photos :)
Don’t post own content, it’s not a problem at all :)
Post a lot of own content, cool :)
Read 100+ books a year, well done :)
Read maybe 10 or less books a year, still well done

Booklr is not a competition between other blogs, it’s a place to share your love for books, by rants, fanart, photo, reblogging things you like, quotes, your own writing, reviews literally anything to do with books.

You have a booklr?? Amazing keep going :)

amediocremermaid:

In many ‘Spaghetti Western’ films, a broad sub-genre of American Western films that emerged during the 1960s in the midst of Sergio Leone’s film-making success, many of the vuglar roles Native Americans were hired to act in forced them into offensive portrayals with little attention paid to authenticity, with emphasis only placed on painting them as “simple savages.” As a result, many American filmmakers paid little attention to actually translating the indigenous languages for what they were saying on screen. As a result, many actors were able to say what they really felt.

Reel Injun, Documentary (2009)

it’s on netflix right now for anyone that wants to catch it

This is such a good documentary, guys. I try and convince all my students to watch it. It was made by Neil Diamond, a Cree filmmaker, and it’s an utterly fascinating look at portrayals of indigenous peoples in North American cinema.
