When you use pictures or symbols to represent words or syllables, you’ve created a rebus. Ability is no indication of quality.

My Life as a Spider Librarian
This is the third post about my life as a spider librarian at the University of Alberta’s E.H. Strickland Entomological Museum. Take a look at the first and the second posts.
I think my favourite thing about this volunteer job are the stories that sometimes come with the labels. Some that I can remember include:
“Found in orb web at night.”
“In bananas from Central America. Live when captured, died a week later.”
“From Safeway store.” (I can just hear some panicked Canadian screeching in horror at this one. xD)
My all-time favourites thus far have been:
“Spider slightly scorched from falling onto stove burner.”
and
“Female found killing and eating the male.”

Millennials may be killing marriage and manners, but they’re saving public libraries
Yo, high five, fellow Millennials! We’re getting the important stuff right! ;D
It’s so refreshing to see an article about something we’re saving for once. I’ve seen articles complaining that we’re “killing” golf, malls, soap, napkins, the list is downright ridiculous.
My guess is that because we Millennials be extra poor compared to the previous generations, we take more advantage of the free (temporary) swag we can get at a public library. Which makes sense – the poor are the ones who benefit the most from public libraries, after all, as libraries give them access to things they couldn’t afford.
It’s the same as why the return on investment at small town libraries can be of over $10 brought into the community for every dollar invested in the library.

3 Reasons to Love Netflix’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events”
1. It’s faithful to the books
I’ll admit, I haven’t read the books in a while, but I’d read them obsessively enough as a kid to remember quite a lot of it – especially from the earlier books – and it’s all pretty spot on.
2. The changes from the books make sense and work to enhance the story
Of course not everything is the same. Books and tv shows are utterly different media; not everything that works for one will work for the other. That’s the great thing about adaptations, though – you can expore aspects of a story that was previously unexplored.
All the additions that I’ve seen thu far have only managed to enhance the tale, especially for fans of the book, who get to learn about subplots we never realized were happening in the books due to the perspective the story is told in.
3. It teaches kids things, like big words and literary concepts, without being heavy-handed.
In fact, their explanations are absolutely spot on and highly entertaining.
The fact that the heroes are the ones who are informed and educated while the villains continuously refuse to learn new things also helps to emphasize the power of knowledge and how important it is to learn on your own as well as from others.
(It was from these books that I learned the term “misnomer” as a kid, actually!)

Intersex Activist and Writer Hida Viloria on Being 'Born Both'
We just got this memoir, and I started reading it today!
One of the earliest stories in it is when Hida has an operation and the doctor thoroughly shames he/r, looks down on he/r, and treats he/r like a freak of nature because of he/r intersex body.
S/he stresses out, knows not to go back to that doctor, but really worries that the doctor is right that there’s something wrong because (as the doctor sneered) “it’s not normal.”
So s/he goes to a clinic at the local LGBT center, and the doctor is super supportive, and confirms that there’s nothing wrong, and tells he/r that people’s junk comes in all shapes and sizes, and that he/rs are beautiful.
It just made me think yet again about how fucking important it is to be intersex-inclusive.
Like, even if you don’t care that a super high percentage of intersex people are also trans, bi, lesbian, or gay, and need intersex awareness and allyship from those communities…
or that intersexism, the policing of people’s sex and gender and gender roles, is an integral part of of cissexism and heterosexism, if not the root of it…
it’s still crucial to know how much medical abuse, and other oppression, intersex people face, often even in infancy, and to stand up for them. And to realize that there’s not much chance of the straight world ever doing that, so it’s up to us.

Art of the Day: Leaf from Breviary: Psalm 52, Initial D with the Fool
This small breviary, composed of more than 500 folios, is extraordinary for its length, considering it is the summer portion of a two-volume breviary for the use of Liège. The manuscript was completed for ecclesiastical use at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame and St.-Lambert in Liège ca. 1420. This attribution is suggested, for instance, by the petitions to the congregation of this cathedral (fols. 114v-117v), as well as the armorial shield of the family of Surlet de Chokier of Liège represented at the opening of the Psalms. The manuscript has modest, but interesting, decoration with historiated and decorated initials marking the liturgical texts, and occasional angels playing instruments in the margins. The most notable pictorial effect is found in the initials inhabited by transparent figures on rich blue ground. The technique is found, for instance, on fol. 156r with the gold monstrance held by translucent angels for the feast of the Corpus Christi. Poem written by an 11 year old Afghan girl
This poem was recorded in a NYT magazine article about female underground poetry groups in Afghanistan. An amazing article about the ways in which women are using a traditional two line poetry form to express their resistance to male oppression, their feelings about love (considered blasphemous).

Journalist shield law could soon become reality in Canada
The federal Liberal government is prepared to throw its support behind proposed legislation to protect the identity of journalists’ confidential sources, the Star has learned.
The government is expected to announce Friday it will back a Conservative senator’s privately sponsored bill that would, for the first time in Canada, provide statutory protection for the identity of journalists’ sources.
The bill would make it harder for police and other law enforcement or security agencies to spy on journalists’ communications or to seize documents that could reveal their sources. It would also make it harder for the cops to use whatever information is seized or captured by warranted surveillance.
The Journalistic Sources Protection Act, S-231, was introduced by Sen. Claude Carignan in November after revelations that Montreal police spied on the communications of 10 journalists in Quebec in recent years — a scandal that has prompted a public inquiry in the province.
In a major move that could see a new law adopted within a few months, the Liberals will propose a handful of technical amendments to address “legal and policy concerns” with the bill as drafted — changes that a senior government official characterized as “reasonable” and that Carignan said he supports.
