Today a Grade 8 girl was getting really grouchy/distressed about not being able to find a book she’d like to take out.
I asked her what kind of book she likes and she gave a frustrated nearly weepy sigh and mumbled she likes all kinds of books. She just likes reading.
I then calmly asked her what usually attracts her most to a story – was it the characters? The setting?
She paused in her teen angsting for a moment, considering the question.
“The characters.”
I then began kind of giving quick mini-presentations of a bunch of the books:
- Artemis Fowl is a magic adventure with elves and fairies set in modern time, where the main character is a criminal mastermind.
- The End of Days is about the end of the world, if you’re looking for something spooky or dark. It’s supposed to be really good.
- The Summer We Saved the Bees is about this boy whose mom is obsessed with saving the bees. She makes him dress up in a bee costume for her presentations that she does around the province.
A smile tugged at her lips at my description of the third book.
“I think I’ll look at the bee one to see if I like it.”
She did.
Mwahahahahaha.
