Death comes for an abbott in one of Hans Holbein’s woodcuts from The Dance of Death. Holbein, working in the early 1500s, meant to express that death came for everyone – young and old, rich and poor – often mocking their social stations (as it does here, with death adorned with the accoutrements of a bishop).
