Story Facts
Cinderella’s small feet likely come from the fact that the oldest known version of the tale is Chinese – from back when foot-binding was in full swing.
In other words, her small feet were likely due to being bound, making her stepmother even more evil for making her do all the work!

Perhaps libraries could try something similar for books that aren’t public domain by linking them to their borrowing page for the book instead?

Tiptoeing Through the Fake-News Minefield
“Fake” used to be an easy word to define, one that most people would agree upon, no dictionary required. Then along came the fake news tsunami—and suddenly that certainty came crashing down, a mudslide of competing views wrestling their way down the slippery slope of semantics.
For the last few months, the phrase fake news has been used to describe everything from, well, news that are fake, to stories with a lot—or even just a hint, depending on who’s talking—of ideology stuck to their words, even if all the facts in the story are accurate.
And the maelstrom of heated public conversation around the issue has now claimed another casualty, as Harvard Library drew the ire of many when it included in their otherwise useful “Fake News Guide” a controversial list of “False, Misleading, Clickbait-y, and/or Satirical ‘News’ Sources” which includes such sites as Think Progress (“a news site dedicated to providing … rigorous reporting and analysis from a progressive perspective”), The Onion, and the Tribune Herald (the latter two being satirical sites). Details and analysis in this article by Harvard’s own Nieman Lab, an “online reporting enterprise focused on the future of news and innovation.”

Top 10 books by transgender authors featuring trans characters
Cisgender authors can write great trans characters, but trans authors live the experiences of their characters every day and their voices need to be the loudest on trans issues, argues teen writer John Hansen. So here’s a list of the best trans YA and middle grade books by trans and non-binary authors
This article makes a good point about books from small presses sometimes being hard to find. We have some of these at the library, but not all - which makes this an excellent time to remind you that you can request books that aren’t in our collection, and we will find a way to get them to you. It’s probably also a good time to remind you that your purchase requests and check-out history are confidential.

Leaves of anguish: One family’s quest shows challenges of finding new homes for old books - The Boston Globe
In this region of intellectuals, used bookstores find themselves inundated with calls as more baby boomers die and others downsize. At the same time, many libraries have faced budget cuts that make them unable to accept the extra stock, and the Internet has rendered many reference books useless.
So families face a difficult and exhausting time finding new homes for beloved book collections.

npr:
In the 1950s and ‘60s, if there were any children’s books in a house, at least one of them was likely to be a Little Golden Book. With their golden spines and brightly colored pictures, they begged to be grabbed off a shelf by a curious child — which is exactly what their creators intended. Those beloved books celebrate their 75th birthday this year.

Library named for Charleston shooting victim Cynthia Hurd hit with racist, sexist graffiti
- Police in Charleston, South Carolina, are investigating instances of racist, sexist and anti-gay graffiti found on three local buildings Monday.
- Including the Cynthia Graham Hurd St. Andrews Regional Library which was named for its former manager, Cynthia Hurd, less than a month after she was murdered by white supremacist Dylann Roof.
- “Go to hell black women,” the graffiti read, according to WCIV. “Fuck crackers. Fuck da police.”
- “Fuck yall white devil,” was also spray painted on a shed at the local aquatic center. Police are looking into whether the incidents are related. No suspects have been identified. Read more (3/14/17 12:42 PM)

Move public libraries out of private buildings, report urges | GuelphMercury.com
Guelph Public Library audit findings show that it could save a lot of cash by moving into city-owned buildings.
At $68 per capita, it’s the most expensive public library system in Ontario (though auditors make a point of reminding that how each library organizes its accounts is unique and therefore comparisons should come with a healthy grain of salt).
The biggest cost difference to other libraries is what it pays on rent for its buildings, which are on privately owned facilities (hence the huge cut in cost if they were to move).

Death comes for an abbott in one of Hans Holbein’s woodcuts from The Dance of Death. Holbein, working in the early 1500s, meant to express that death came for everyone – young and old, rich and poor – often mocking their social stations (as it does here, with death adorned with the accoutrements of a bishop).

Well, her last name should actually be pronounced Crah-VAH-lee-oh, but I’m guessing it got anglicised over time. My roommate in college had the last name Chaves (shh-AH-vees), but because all the English speaking Canadians Dave zero funks about pronouncing their family name correctly her family just gave up and now mispronounce their own name as chay-vss instead.
